Two Hour Tote TUTORIAL

20130630-194445.jpgWelcome back to Twelve MORE Weeks of Christmas, the Friday edition! Today, I'm going to show you how to make my two hour tote. If you have the supplies on hand, you can make this in about two hours! I once taught two fun students and with all the snack breaks and decision making, it became the two DAY tote! But that's another story for another day! Gail & Peggy do look pretty cute with their totes:)20130717-161612.jpgLet's get started!

20130719-155614.jpg1. Fabric & Supplies: You need 1/2 yard for the main fabric, 1/2 yard for lining, 1/2 yard for straps, 1/4 for pocket & lining and 1 yard of fusible fleece.20130717-161937.jpg2. Cutting: Cut three 6" x wof (width of fabric) for the straps.20130717-162153.jpgCut the main fabric & the lining both to 18 x 40".20130717-162325.jpgCut the pocket & pocket lining to 8 x 10".20130717-162432.jpgCut three strips of fusible fleece to 1 3/8" x wof. Cut a 18 x 40" piece for the main fabric and an 8 x 10" piece for the pocket.20130717-163023.jpg3. Making the Strap: Trim off the selvage ends of the three strap strips.20130717-163208.jpgSew them together end to end with a 1/2" seam allowance.20130717-163225.jpgYou will make a giant loop measuring approximately 126".20130717-164202.jpgPress the seams open.20130717-164212.jpgPress the entire loop in half lengthwise.20130717-164355.jpgOpen it up and press the raw edge to the center.20130717-164403.jpgPress.20130717-164419.jpgRepeat with the other raw edge.20130717-164425.jpgFold it back in half. You should have this!20130717-164841.jpg4. Fusing: Fuse the 8 x 10" piece of fusible fleece to the pocket.20130717-165149.jpgAlso fuse the main fabric to the fusible fleece.20130717-165327.jpgLay the fusible strips in the open strap.20130717-170155.jpgPress.20130717-170225.jpgOverlap the ends slightly to connect the strips. You'll trim off a bit of excess when you complete the loop.20130717-170310.jpgOnce you've attached the fusible fleece all the way around, go back and press the whole loop.20130717-172042.jpg5. Making the Pocket: Lay the pocket lining right sides together with the pocket.20130717-173128.jpgSew the top and bottom (the 8" sides) with a 1/2" seam allowance.20130717-173250.jpgIt should look like this.20130717-173613.jpgTurn it right sides out.20130717-173620.jpgPress. TIP: If you press the seams open before you turn it right sides out, it will help the lining lay towards the back and not peek out.20130717-174046.jpgTopstitch one 8" side. This will be the top.20130717-181742.jpg6. Attaching the Straps & Pocket Topstich all the way around the loop on both edges. Sew the open edge first. I used Sulky 30 wt with a slightly longer seam. I recommend using a walking foot for the rest of this project if you have it.20130717-174859.jpgIt should look like this!20130717-180509.jpgFold the straps in half and then in half again.20130717-180828.jpgMark with pins.20130717-180842.jpgTake the main fabric and fold it in half so that it measures 18 x 20".20130717-181340.jpgLay the pocket on the main fabric. It should be 4 3/4" from each side.20130717-184127.jpgAnd 4 1/4" from the top.20130717-184200.jpgPin. Only pin through the top layer of the main fabric.20130717-184356.jpgTopstitch the bottom of the pocket. I suggest two rows of stitching.20130717-185527.jpgLay the straps on the main fabric. You will overlap the raw edges of the pocket.20130717-190217.jpgThe straps should be 4" from the edge.20130717-190241.jpgPin in place.20130718-061659.jpgPlace pins horizontally from the top at 2" & 3 1/4".20130718-061705.jpgPin on both sides.20130718-062810.jpgPin the back of the tote using the same measurements.20130718-062816.jpgAttach the strap by sewing along the same seam line. Start at the bottom stitching towards the pocket.20130718-063257.jpgUsing the horizontal pins as markers, make a box to secure the top of the strap. I cross the boxes for added stability.20130718-224522.jpgSew down both sides. This what you should have!20130719-120938.jpg7. Finishing the Tote: Fold the tote right sides together.20130719-121220.jpgPin the sides.20130719-121429.jpgFold the lining fabric so that it measures 18 x 20".20130719-121607.jpgPin the sides.20130719-121705.jpgSew up the sides of both the main fabric and the lining. Start at the bottom and sew towards the top on all four sides; this will move all excess fabric towards the top.20130719-123503.jpgPress the crease along the bottom of both the lining and the main fabric.20130719-123949.jpgFold the corner so that the crease aligns with the seam.20130719-124429.jpgMark 2" from the tip and pin. Mark all four corners.20130719-124718.jpgSew along the marked line. Back stitch at the beginning and end. Sew all four corners. I do not trim the corners because I think they add stability to the bottom.20130719-130048.jpgTurn the main fabric right side out.20130719-130554.jpg20130719-130718.jpgPlace the main fabric inside the lining.20130719-131052.jpgAlign the seams of the main fabric with the lining and pin.20130719-131331.jpgPin around the top leaving a 6-8" opening that is NOT to be sewn. I leave the opening on the back of the tote (the side without the pocket). Make sure the handles are out of the way.20130719-131843.jpgSew with a 1" seam allowance around the top. Back stitch at the beginning and the end. Do NOT sew the 6-8" opening.20130719-132630.jpgTurn the tote right side out.20130719-133133.jpgPress the lining.20130719-133447.jpgMake sure the corners are neat and pressed out.20130719-133551.jpgPlace the lining inside the tote.

20130719-133800.jpgPress the tote neatly around the top edge. Make sure the lining does not peak out.

20130719-134252.jpgPress the opening.

20130719-134344.jpgPin carefully.

20130719-135355.jpgTopstitch around the top edge. Start behind a strap to hide your start/stop.

20130719-135708.jpgYou're done!!
