A (Very) Special Honor
There are lots of groups out there dedicated to honoring Veterans and making special quilts for wounded soldiers. One that comes immediately to mind is Quilts of Valor. Every time I see a quilt made by someone in this group, I'm a little bit more proud to live in this country. And I think, "I should make a quilt..." And it goes on my list for someday...Then I started teaching at Linderellas in the heart of a large military base. Time and again, I met people connected to active duty service, veterans and a handful of wounded warriors. I became good friends with one student in particular. Her story isn't mine to tell, but we quickly bonded. So I had to (finally) make a quilt for her husband!
I used the Accuquilt and lots of red and blue! I wanted it to feel fresh and modern.
For the back, I used the half hexagon die. I love this quilt back!!
I put a label in the middle of a hexie!
And I quilted with straight random lines and triangles in Aurifil 50 wt.
I love the blue and navy binding. It's patriotic colors, but with a young spirit.
Here's a picture of him with the quilt!! Best. Photo. Ever! I got a minute by minute account of the opening of the package!
I feel like this quilt took me forever to make, but it really was a honor to make something special and be able to say thank you directly to him! While I was working away on this, I got an email from a friend of mine, Kari, who is involved with Quilts of Valor in Durham, NC. She asked me to donate some of my Designer Star patterns to her group. I also agreed to teach the Designer Star class to her group for FREE. So, if you're in the area and are interested in making a quilt of valor...the class is next Saturday, April 5 in Durham from 9:30-2:30. If want to come, please let me know and I'll get you in touch with Lisa at Operation Sew Thankful! Sewlux Fabric also did kits for the class!
Is there anything better than using our passion to show our appreciation?xo LC
