Terrific Tip Tuesday: Making Bias Tape without a Tool
A lot of Tuesday Tips are things that I wrongly assume “everybody knows”. A lot of them are things that someone shows me assuming I know and I’m blown away! Today’s tip is the former. My friend Chrissy is mask making like a lot of us and she was lamenting not owning a bias tape maker. I said, well you can use pins! She said, TUESDAY TIP! Let’s go. First, you’ll place long pins on your pressing area iron width apart. They should have an opening that is half your cut size.
Feed your strip under the pins with each edge folded to the middle.
Place your iron in the middle of the pins and pull through gently.
If you want double fold bias tape (which is what you need for a tie), repeat the process with your pins at 1/4 the cut size folding the piece in half.
Quick side note: Bias tape is fabric cut on the bias. It will have give and stretch because it is bias. I am using straight of grain because it works for this method and I do not need or want stretch in my final product.
